Compressive load bearing and bone architecture of lumbar vertebrae in terms of sex and aging

Relation between vertebral compressive strength and trabecular architecture is presented in terms of aging and sex. Complex in vitro medical-engineering analysis of cadaver human lumbar L1 and L2 vertebrae was executed: densitometry, CT, MRI, mechanical test and histology, in aspect of osteoporosis. In this paper the results of the mechanical test are detailed only. The compressive mechanical parameters, like limit stress and strain, proportional stress and strain, Young modulus, ductility, energy absorption capacity were determined. Morphometry analysis was based on the CT pictures. Density and diameter of trabeculae were measured. Pion condensation in the two--flavor chiral quark model at finite baryochemical potential

Pion condensation is studied at one--loop level and nonzero baryochemical potential in the framework of two flavor constituent quark model using the one--loop level optimized perturbation theory for the resummation of the perturbative series. A Landau type of analysis is presented for the investigation of the phase boundary between the pion condensed/non-condensed phases. The statement that the condensation starts at \muI = m_{\pi} is slightly modified by one--loop corrections. The second order critical surface is determined and analysed in the \muI-\muB-T space. Improvements to Existing Transit Detection Algorithms and Their Comparison

In Tingley (2003), all available transit detection algorithms were compared in a simple, rigorous test. However, the implementation of the Box-fitting Least Squares (BLS) approach of Kovacs et al. (2002) used in that paper was not ideal for those purposes. This letter revisits the comparison, using a version of the BLS better suited to the task at hand and made more efficient via the knowledge gained from the previous work. Multiple variations of the BLS and the matched filter are tested. ZnO layers deposited by Atomic Layer Deposition

The structure of 40 nm thick epitaxial ZnO layers grown on single crystalline sapphire and GaN substrates by atomic layer deposition has been studied using transmission electron microscopy. The growth is carried out between 150°C and 300°C without any buffer layer using di-ethyl zinc and water precursors. The ZnO layer on sapphire is found to be polycrystalline, which is probably due to the large misfit (~15 %) and the relatively low deposition temperature. However, the small misfit (~1.8 %) between the ZnO layer that is deposited on GaN at 300°C resulted in a high quality single crystalline layer

Conceptual spaces and the consequences of category spanning

A general finding in economic and organizational sociology shows that objects that span categories lose appeal to audiences. This paper argues that the negative consequences of crossing boundaries are more severe when the categories spanned are distant and have high contrast. Available empirical strategies do not incorporate information on the distances among categories. Here we introduce novel measures of distance in conceptual space and derive measures for typicality, category contrast, and categorical niche width. Using the proposed measurement approach, we test our theory using data on online reviews of books and restaurants

Medium-resolution echelle spectroscopy of pulsating variables and exoplanet host stars with sub-meter telescopes

Here we present two of our interesting results obtained over the last 18 months from spectroscopic monitoring of binary pulsating stars and exoplanet host stars.
